Vancouver City Central Transmission Horizontal Directional Drill

Michels was prime contractor for installation of a power cable duct under False Creek in conjunction with the Vancouver City Central Transmission Project. The duct and its 230 kV transmission line required a 850m Horizontal Directional Drill. This was Vancouver’s most significant power project in 30 years. Seven 10″ HDPE ducts, and six grout pipes were pulled in place. The main drill rig was located in David Lam Park, site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and a second rig was situated across False Creek on Laurel Street, a narrow city street with a 7° incline. A sound mitigation wall was installed around the David Lam Parksite.
