Scope

Michels was the Prime Contractor on the FortisBC Coastal Transmission System Project in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The 11-kilometre project consisted of 36-inch and 42-inch new pipe construction in a heavily urban environment.

The project included more than 300 facility crossings while working in parallel proximity to Metro Vancouver's water main and force main sanitary lines as well as the existing FortisBC natural gas transmission line. There were 25 road crossings and 7 watercourse crossings on the project.

Projects

Michels Canada performed an emergency horizontal directional drill (HDD) of 469 metres. The project was a 5-string bundle of 4-inch, 8-inch and three 12-inch pipes.

Michels constructed a 36.2 km (22.5-mile), 30-inch pipeline for the Thornbury section of the Liege Lateral Loop 2.

Michels drilled a 966-metre, 36-inch hole under the North Saskatchewan River to simultaneously install a 24-inch welded steel pipeline segment and two strands of 1 1/4-inch polyethylene conduit containing fiber optic cables.

Michels completed three Horizontal Directional Drills (HDD) and one Direct Pipe installation as part of the Cold Lake South Mainline Loop, an NPS 42 bitumen pipeline originating at the IPF LaCory Facility north of Bonnyville, Alberta to the IPF Facility in Hardisty, Alberta.

Michels used HDD to complete a 800 metre of 12-inch pipe installation under the St. Lawrence River.

Construction consisted of a 305-metre horseshoe tunnel with a diameter of 1800 millimetres, a cast-in-place junction chamber, a live sewer tie-in, and a 1200-millimetre diameter sewer installed beneath a very busy arterial roadway.
